The largest of the Southern Moreton Bay islands is Russell Island, next in size is Macleay Island then Lamb Island, with Karragarra Island being the smallest of the four. These islands are vibrant communities and have most of the needed services. The two largest islands, Russell and Macleay, have most of these services, including shopping centres, primary schools, police stations, medical facilities, community centres, transport, history and more.

Moreton Bay and the Southern Moreton Bay Islands are in the centre of Southeast Queensland, Australia, with Brisbane on its Western flank and Bribie, Moreton and North Stradbroke islands providing a barrier between Moreton Bay and the Pacific Ocean. A little to the South is the Gold Coast, with the Sunshine Coast on the Northern flank. At the Southern end of the bay there is a group of four populated islands, known as the Southern Moreton Bay Islands. Russell Island, the largest with a growing urban population has substantial conservation areas, much of which are still in a pristine condition.

Life on the islands is easy going and the people friendly. Far cry from the hustle and bustle of the mainland. This does not mean that the islanders are lazy - far from it. Maybe it is the beautiful weather all year round, maybe the sea air or just the community spirit that makes life on the islands an everyday pleasure. On the islands you find even strangers salute you, because there are no strangers on the islands, only islanders.

The calm waters around the islands make boating and kayaking especially enjoyable. Not to mention fishing, whether you get anything or not - but that isn't really the point - is it ? - To be on a boat, on the water, where the blue of the sky and the balmy weather make you feel like a king - that's what it's all about. Just one of the Moreton Bay treasures.

Due to the pleasant climate all year round and the safe environment, more and more retirees are discovering "the islands in the sun" as a perfect spot to enjoy their retirement.

For visitors to the islands there is a regular ferry and barge service, as well as a variety of accommodation alternatives, from motel to bed and breakfast, to holiday houses. There is something for everyone, from a one night stay to a lifetime.

This site contains information about the communities, businesses, accommodation, services and much more  on the Southern Moreton Bay islands, including activities, real estate, cheap house and land prices,  island ferries, barges and city bus timetables.
